HANOI, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's gross domestic product (GDP) expanded 7.09 percent in 2024, driven by services and industrial production, the country's General Statistics Office (GSO) announced on Monday.

The figure exceeded the National Assembly's annual GDP target of 6.5 percent.

The service sector made the largest contribution to the whole year's growth at over 49.46 percentage points, while the industry and construction contributed 45.17 percentage points.

The agro-forestry and fishery sector contributed 5.37 percentage points to the overall growth, according to the report.

GSO General Director Nguyen Thi Huong said the agro-forestry and fishery sector in 2024 achieved a positive growth rate of 3.27 percent despite being affected by natural disasters.

The industry and construction sector reported a positive recovery compared to 2023 while trade and tourism activities maintained high growth momentum, making a contribution to the growth of the service sector, she said.

The Southeast Asian country's GDP growth in Q4 posted an increase of 7.55 percent year-on-year, said the office. In 2023, Vietnam posted a GDP growth of 5.05 percent.

Vietnam will strive to achieve a GDP growth of 8 percent in 2025, laying the foundation for double-digit growth in 2026, said Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in his New Year message. Enditem
