Hungary to reopen embassy in Damascus as Syria's security stabilizes

BUDAPEST, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Hungary is reopening its embassy in Damascus following signs of stabilization in Syria's security situation, foreign minister Peter Szijjarto announced Monday.

In a Facebook post, Szijjarto, minister of foreign affairs and trade, said the move aims to obtain "first-hand, credible information" on developments in Syria and ensure Hungary could "act in the interests of Hungarian citizens if necessary."

Hungary closed its embassy in Damascus in early December due to "escalating violence in Syria." Enditem
