KIEV, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- The destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant and its dam has inflicted about 14 billion U.S. dollars in damages on Ukraine, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency on Monday cited a government minister.
"We estimate that nearly 14 billion dollars in damages resulted from the destruction of the Kakhovka dam and the loss of water resources," said Svitlana Grynchuk, Ukraine's Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources.
She highlighted that about 30 percent of the Kherson region's nature conservation fund was flooded and consequently lost due to the Kakhovka incident.
The government is working to identify new water supply sources and construct new canals to ensure access to drinking water for the affected population, the minister added.
The Kakhovka dam was destroyed in June 2023, triggering widespread flooding. Ukraine has accused Russia of attacking the dam, but Russia has rejected the allegations. Enditem
