NEW YORK, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- A massive winter storm pummeled a large portion of the United States over the weekend, burying many cities in the Midwest under several inches of snow before moving to the Mid-Atlantic region on Monday, causing widespread school closings and dangerous travel conditions.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said the storm would move from the Ohio Valley to the Mid-Atlantic on Monday, with "severe travel delays" and "major impacts" expected for portions of West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Delaware.

"An additional 6-12 inches of snow is expected across the Mid-Atlantic states, including the Washington, D.C. metro area," said the weather service, adding that an additional two to four inches is likely across portions of the Ohio Valley.

According to snowfall reports from the NWS, states as far west as Colorado and Wyoming and as far east as Delaware have seen snow in the last 24 hours. Enditem
