JAKARTA, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) on Monday officially terminated Shin Tae-yong's contract as head coach of the national men's football team.

PSSI chairman Erick Thohir said the association needs a coach who can implement a unified strategy agreed upon by all players and foster more effective communication.

"What we are doing today is for the good of the national team," he said.

Thohir explained that the decision to dismiss Shin came after a lengthy period of evaluation, taking multiple factors into account.

Shin, who started his tenure with the PSSI in December 2019, helped raise Indonesia's world ranking from 173rd to 127th. In the 2026 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers, Indonesia currently sits third in a six-team group, with six points from six matches.

A new coach will be officially announced on Jan. 12. Enditem
