Tokyo stocks end higher on strong chips

TOKYO, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended higher on Tuesday, as chip stocks rose sharply after overnight gains by their U.S. peers.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended up 776.25 points, or 1.97 percent, from Monday at 40,083.30.

The broader Topix index, finished 30.19 points, or 1.10 percent, higher at 2,786.57.

On the stock market, the benchmark Nikkei index briefly rose nearly 1,000 points to finish above the 40,000 line, as semiconductor-related shares posted sharp gains, tracking the solid rise of the U.S. Nasdaq index overnight, analysts said.

Shares of chip-making equipment maker Tokyo Electron soared 11.25 percent to be the biggest boost to the Nikkei index, while chip-testing equipment maker Advantest gained 4.72 percent. Enditem
