TOKYO, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended lower on Wednesday, amid caution following declines in U.S. shares overnight.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended down 102.24 points, or 0.26 percent, from Tuesday at 39,981.06.

The broader Topix index, finished 16.57 points, or 0.59 percent, lower at 2,770.00.

Stocks stayed in negative territory, weighed down by Wall Street losses overnight, as investors were cautious about prospects of the U.S. shares after upbeat economic data fueled concerns that sticky inflation in the U.S. could slow the Federal Reserve's pace of interest rate cuts, analysts said.

The falls, meanwhile, were trimmed by buying of export-related issues on the back of a weaker yen. Enditem
