VILNIUS, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Lithuania's Defense Ministry has compiled the 2025 conscription list, including 25,149 young people subject to military service, the Baltic News Service (BNS) reported on Wednesday.
The list was drawn up in the presence of four independent observers, according to the ministry. The full list is expected to be published by Friday, with the first conscripts starting service in early February.
Under the conscription reforms adopted last year, 18- to 22-year-olds who have finished school are eligible for military service. Students can either suspend their studies during service or complete training as junior officers over three years. Voluntary non-permanent military service is also available in the National Defense Volunteer Forces.
Students entering higher education before being listed can defer their service or volunteer if they prefer.
The duration of alternative service has been extended from 10 to 12 months. Graduates with skills needed by the military may be called up for three months of service. Enditem
