SAO TOME, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Independent Democratic Action Party (ADI), the ruling party in Sao Tome and Principe, on Wednesday proposed Helio Almeida as the new prime minister and head of government, replacing Patrice Trovoada, who was dismissed on Monday by the country's President Carlos Vila Nova.

The announcement was made through a letter sent to the president and published on the party's official Facebook page. The letter, still signed by Trovoada, the party leader, explained that the decision was made in response to a presidential decree issued on Monday.

The country's national news agency STP-Press reported on Wednesday that Almeida's nomination fulfills the president's request for the ADI to propose a new prime minister within 72 hours following the dismissal of Trovoada's government.

Almeida currently serves as director-general of the Fiduciary and Project Management Agency and previously held the position of governor of the Central Bank of Sao Tome and Principe.

As reported by local media Tela-Non, the ADI held a press conference on Wednesday advocating for early legislative elections and accusing the president of attempting to "sink the country into total chaos."

On Tuesday, Trovoada held a press conference at his office, describing the president's decision as unconstitutional. The ADI has submitted an appeal to the Constitutional Court to overturn the decision.

Both Vila Nova and Trovoada are members of the ADI. In September 2022, the party won the legislative elections, securing an absolute majority in Parliament, which led to Trovoada becoming prime minister. Enditem
