YANGON, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation has designated a new protected mangrove forest area in the southern state of Mon, the state-run daily The Mirror reported on Thursday.

The ministry designated 9,284 acres of land in the region's Thaton township as a protected mangrove forest area, effective from Jan. 2, 2025, the report said.

The move aimed to ensure the long-term sustainability of mangrove ecosystems, improve management practices, protect biodiversity, and mitigate the impacts of natural disasters such as tidal waves and cyclones, the report said.

It will also help enhance the ecosystem for aquatic species, support the socioeconomic development of local communities, stabilize the coastal environment and mitigate climate change impacts, according to the report. Enditem
