YEREVAN, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Armenia's Cabinet approved a bill on Thursday to launch the country's European Union (EU) accession process, Armenpress reported.

Endorsing the bill, which was submitted to parliament by the Eurovote civic initiative after a petition, the Cabinet also proposed amendments to align it with legal standards, including rephrasing certain sections and clarifying timeframes.

Meanwhile, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan urged caution against premature societal expectations about EU membership.

"Adopting the law doesn't equate to Armenia joining the EU. That decision can only be made through a referendum, as stipulated by the Constitution," said Pashinyan.

He also outlined the next steps, which include discussions with the EU to develop a roadmap reflecting mutual visions.

"Before negotiations on a roadmap begin, Armenia has no immediate actions to undertake," he added. Enditem
