DAR ES SALAAM, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's anti-narcotics authorities said Thursday they have intercepted a boat ferrying 448.3 kg of illicit drugs in the country's territorial waters of the Indian Ocean.

Aretas Lyimo, commissioner-general of the Drug Control and Enforcement Authority (DCEA), said the seized drugs, including heroin and methamphetamine, was located on a watercraft flying a Pakistani flag.

Lyimo told a press conference in the port city of Dar es Salaam that eight Pakistani nationals were also arrested in relation to the intercepted drugs, adding that the Pakistanis would face the charge for drug trafficking after the conclusion of preliminary investigations.

He said the boat can ferry eight tonnes of cargo.

The DCEA, in collaboration with other security agencies, impounded an additional 224.9 kg of illicit drugs along the Indian Ocean's Dar es Salaam coastline, Lyimo added.

He revealed that the drugs were intercepted and seized between November and December of last year. Enditem
