GAZA -- The Palestinian death toll from Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, 2023, has reached 46,006, with injuries up to 109,378, health authorities in Gaza announced Thursday.

BEIRUT -- Lebanon's army chief Joseph Aoun was elected president in the second round of the presidential vote held on Thursday, local media reported.
Aoun obtained 99 votes in the second round of the electoral session, which was attended by 128 members of parliament, Lebanese TV channel Al Jadeed reported. His victory marks the end of more than two years of presidential vacancy in Lebanon. (Lebanon-President-Election)

BAGHDAD -- The Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service said Thursday that its forces killed up to 70 Islamic State (IS) militants in 2024.
In a statement, the Service said that its forces conducted 344 operations across the country during the year and arrested 144 terrorists, in addition to destroying 310 IS hideouts. (Iraq-IS Militants-Killing)

JERUSALEM -- Israeli security sources said on Thursday that the commander of Hamas' battalion in Gaza City, his deputy and two elite Nukhba company commanders were killed in a series of airstrikes last week.
The airstrikes targeted Osama Abu Namos, the commander of the Sabra Battalion in the Gaza City Brigade of Hamas, the Israel Defense Forces and Shin Bet security agency said in a joint statement. (Israel-Hamas Commanders-Death) Enditem
