RABAT, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Moroccan King Mohammed VI has granted amnesty to 1,304 prisoners on the eve of Independence Manifesto Day, a major national holiday in Morocco, the Moroccan Ministry of Justice announced in a statement on Friday.
The pardon applies to 948 inmates, whose prison sentences have been reduced, while 356 others have had their sentences or fines annulled.
Independence Manifesto Day, celebrated annually on Jan. 11, marks the anniversary of the publication of the 1944 Independence Manifesto, a landmark political document in which Moroccan nationalists called for the country's independence.
In Morocco, royal pardons are traditionally granted during major national commemorations or religious festivals. Enditem
