YAOUNDE, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Cameroonian President Paul Biya has called on the international community to strengthen solidarity and enhance cooperation in tackling global challenges.

Biya made the appeal on Friday in the presence of top government officials and the diplomatic corps during a traditional New Year ceremony in the capital city of Yaounde.

In addition to the ongoing sources of conflict and tension around the world, he also mentioned the looming threat of nuclear war, which could have devastating consequences for humanity's future.

"Clearly, what our world needs is more solidarity. If we want to survive, we have no choice but to determine our common priorities, to give us the means necessary to achieve them, and to unite our energies," Biya said.

He urged the international community to support a multilateral system that is fair, transparent and inclusive.

Biya said dialogue, peaceful conflict resolution, cooperation and strong solidarity should be the guiding principles in this effort. Enditem
