ALMATY, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- A fire erupted in the main building of the Kazakh-British Technical University was under control Saturday night, Kazakhstan's Ministry of Emergency Situations said.
The blaze was first discovered at about 10 p.m. local time (1700 GMT), with smoke coming from under the roof of the building's facade.
Dozens of fire brigades arrived at the scene, with 78 rescuers and 28 units of equipment joining the effort.
A short circuit in the electrical wiring could have caused the fire, a firefighter was quoted by a local newspaper as saying.
The building was constructed in 1957. The law on Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan was adopted here in 1991. Enditem
