ZAGREB, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Incumbent Croatian President Zoran Milanovic won the presidential runoff held on Sunday, beating his rival Dragan Primorac, exit polls showed.

According to exit polls published by three major local television stations - HRT, Nova TV and RTL, Milanovic won 77.86 percent of the vote, far ahead of Primorac, who only got 22.14 percent.

During the first round of election on Dec. 29 last year, Milanovic, backed by the largest opposition party, the Social Democratic Party, and Primorac, supported by the ruling Croatian Democratic Union, ranked first and second with 49.09 percent and 19.35 percent of the votes respectively among eight candidates.

According to Croatian law, if no one secures more than half of the votes in the first round, the two leading candidates will be enrolled in a presidential runoff held two weeks later.

Milanovic, who narrowly missed an outright victory in the first round, entered the second round with an obvious advantage over Primorac. Ahead of Sunday runoff, the latest polls showed a supporting rate of 62.5 percent for Milanovic, while 27.8 percent for Primorac. Enditem
