MADRID, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Atletico Madrid returned to the top of La Liga on Sunday with a 1-0 win at home to Osasuna thanks to a second-half goal from Julian Alvarez.
Atletico took advantage of the fact Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are playing in the Spanish Supercup final to make it eight consecutive league wins and 14 in all competitions.
Atletico now stands a point ahead of Real Madrid and six ahead of Barcelona, after Alvarez was given space to volley in Clement Lenglet's knockdown from a cross from Antoine Griezmann.
It wasn't a spectacular performance from Atletico, who had Giuliano Simeone as their most explosive player, but they did enough to take all three points against a rival that rested some players with an eye on Thursday's Copa del Rey tie away to Athletic Bilbao.
Also on Sunday, Getafe goalkeeper David Soria made a string of important saves as his side stunned Las Palmas 2-1.
A win for Las Palmas in front of their home fans would have lifted them almost definitively away from the relegation zone, but time after time they were denied by Soria.
Meanwhile, at the other end, Coba da Costa and Borja Mayoral took their chances, and Adnan Januzaj's spectacular 88th-minute effort came too late for Las Palmas to save a point.
The round of games ends on Monday when Real Sociedad plays Villarreal. Enditem
