SYDNEY, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- A woman has died, and a man has been hospitalized after the car they were in crashed into a house in Sydney's southwest on Monday.

Police in the state of New South Wales (NSW) said that officers were called to reports of a crash in the suburb of Belfield, about 12 km southwest of central Sydney at 10:30 a.m. local time.

The female passenger was trapped for "some time" before being freed by emergency services, NSW Police said.

She was treated by ambulance paramedics but died at the scene.

The 82-year-old male driver of the car was also treated at the scene before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Photos published by News Corp Australia newspapers showed significant damage to part of the house, but authorities have not said if anyone was inside at the time.

NSW Police declared a crime scene and have begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Enditem
