KABUL, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- More than 1 billion U.S. dollars have been invested in the poultry sector in Afghanistan to help the post-war country achieve self-sufficiency in producing meat and eggs, spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock said.

"Over 1 billion dollars have been invested in the poultry sector by private enterprises and currently more than 15,000 poultry farms exist in Afghanistan," local media outlet Tolonews quoted Misbahuddin Mustaeen as saying on Sunday.

The ministry will continue to support poultry farmers, according to the official.

In the meantime, Mirwais Haji Zada, deputy of the Chamber of Agriculture and Livestock, said that if more land is distributed and on long-term leases to investors, they will also be willing to invest in the poultry sector to enhance the chicken breeding industry in the country, Tolonews reported.
