JAKARTA, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Five fishermen were missing after their boat was struck by huge waves and sank last Friday in waters off Selayar Islands Regency in the eastern Indonesian province of South Sulawesi, local police said on Monday.
According to a preliminary report, six fishermen were on board when the boat sank at midnight amid extreme weather conditions.
All six reportedly managed to stay together in the sea by clinging to a styrofoam box retrieved from the boat. However, high waves broke the box apart, causing Suaris Dessalle, one of the fishermen, to separate from his five companions on Sunday afternoon.
The 46-year-old managed to survive by holding onto fragments of the styrofoam until he was rescued on Monday by a fisherman from a nearby village.
Ahdiansar, the police chief of Selayar Islands Regency, told local media that a joint rescue team has been deployed to search for his missing companions, whose whereabouts remain unknown. Enditem
