MAPUTO, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Mozambique's parliament swore in the deputies elected for the 10th legislature on Monday, with President Filipe Nyusi presiding over the inauguration ceremony for 210 out of 250 deputies, elected in the general elections held on Oct. 9, 2024.
Of the 250 members of the Assembly of the Republic, 210 were present at Monday's ceremony, including 171 from Frelimo and 39 from the Podemos party.
The ceremony was marked by the absence of members from the main opposition party Renamo and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique, who chose not to take office as a sign of protest.
During the same event, Nyusi also swore in Margarida Talapa as the new speaker of the parliament.
In his speech, Nyusi urged the deputies to adopt a "patriotic spirit" and ensure that their actions align with the will and aspirations of the Mozambican people.
"It is through your leadership that we will shape a prosperous, peaceful, and democratic Mozambique," said the president.
Nyusi said the new legislature marks an important stage in the country's democratic process, highlighting the need to continue the process of reconciliation and stability in Mozambique.
He also stressed that the legislature plays a key role in leading significant political and legal reforms, adding that it will play a decisive role in forming a government capable of addressing the current socio-political and economic challenges.
Meanwhile, Talapa acknowledged that she is assuming the position at a politically delicate moment but pledged to do everything possible to meet the expectations of the Mozambican people. Enditem
