MANILA, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed and 18 others injured, one critically, after a passenger jeepney collided with a tricycle and fell off a bridge along a highway in Bulacan province, north of the Philippine capital, on Tuesday, police said.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Meru told a television reporter on site that the crash happened in Calumpit town on Tuesday afternoon.
Meru said the jeepney driver claimed that he lost his brakes before colliding with a tricycle carrying four people.
In a telephone interview, Elijah Del Rosario, a rescue officer of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said the impact threw the two vehicles off the bridge, killing the tricycle driver and one of the three tricycle passengers.
Among the injured were the two tricycle passengers and the jeepney passengers, who were mostly students, Del Rosario said. They were all transported to a hospital for treatment.
Police detained the jeepney driver.
Jeepneys and tricycles are the most common means of public or private transport in the Philippines. Enditem
