GENEVA, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Over 1.041 million people in Haiti have been internally displaced as of December 2024, accounting for approximately 9 percent of the country's total population, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

According to an IOM report released on Tuesday, This represents a threefold surge in displacement over the past year, climbing from 315,000 in December 2023 to more than a million.

The report highlighted that relentless gang violence, the collapse of essential services -- particularly healthcare -- and worsening food insecurity were the main drivers behind the surge in displaced populations.

The report also pointed out that in the capital, Port-au-Prince, the number of internally displaced people nearly doubled, rising by 87 percent. Children are among the most severely affected, making up over half of the displaced population. Essential needs such as food, healthcare, shelter, and clean drinking water remain critical for those impacted. Enditem
