WARSAW, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Polish Sejm Speaker Szymon Holownia announced on Wednesday that the presidential election will take place on May 18, with a potential second round scheduled for June 1.

The decision has been forwarded to the National Electoral Commission chairman and the prime minister and will be published in the Journal of Laws on Wednesday, marking the official start of the election campaign.

According to the Polish Press Agency, Sylwester Marciniak, head of the National Electoral Commission, confirmed that the draft resolution for the election date and calendar was positively reviewed by the Commission earlier this week.

The Polish president serves a five-year term and may be re-elected only once. Candidates must be Polish citizens and at least 35 years old by election day. Enditem
