CANBERRA, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese Thursday welcomed the ceasefire in the Middle East as a constructive step towards peace and stability.
Albanese on Thursday said that the six-week ceasefire between Israel and Hamas marks the beginning of a "new chapter" for the Israeli and Palestinian people.
"This agreement is a constructive step towards peace and stability in the region," he told reporters in Canberra.
He said that Australia's thoughts are with all the civilians killed, displaced and taken hostage in the conflict and the many humanitarian workers who lost their lives.
Albanese said that the Australian government would continue working with the international community towards a two-state solution with Israel and Palestine "living side by side in peace and security within internationally recognized borders" and continue supporting the urgent humanitarian needs of the people in Gaza.
