NEW DELHI, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 Naxals were killed Thursday in a fierce gunfight with government forces in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, the state-run broadcaster All India Radio said.
The gunfight broke out in the forests of South Bastar close to Telangana border in Bijapur district, about 465 km south of Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh.
According to the report, intermittent exchanges of fire have been ongoing between security forces and Naxals since Thursday morning.
Last week, eight policemen and a driver were killed after a vehicle they were travelling on was blown up by an improvised explosive device blast triggered by Naxals in the district.
Currently, Naxals are active across central and eastern parts of India.
The insurgency has claimed hundreds of lives and rendered thousands of people homeless. Enditem
