ISLAMABAD, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Romina Khurshid Alam, coordinator to the Pakistani prime minister on climate change and environmental coordination, on Thursday called for robust climate strategies and better access to international funds to enhance preparedness for climate-related natural disasters.

"It is essential to make climate risk management strategies and enable access to climate financing to implement projects that strengthen countries' resilience to climate change impacts," the official said during a seminar on climate change.

She said that by integrating innovative financial tools with inclusive, data-driven strategies, governments and global partners can work together to mitigate climate risks, support recovery efforts, and foster resilience across communities.

Talking about the escalating severity of climate impacts that Pakistan is experiencing, Alam underlined vulnerabilities to extreme weather events such as devastating floods, heat waves, droughts, desertification and erratic rainfall patterns.

"These challenges have led to significant economic, social, and environmental repercussions, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations," she said, adding that the country has been making every effort to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

"Pakistan faced one of the worst flood disasters in its history in 2022 forcing displacement of millions of people, destroying crops, and damaging critical infrastructure. These disasters underscore the pressing need for flood resilience and disaster risk reduction measures," Alam said. Enditem
