KABUL, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- More than 2,800 fish farms exist in Afghanistan but the administration with the support of the private sector would enhance the fish breeding farms to meet the local demands, an official has said.

"Currently a total of 2,870 small, medium and large scale fish farms are operational in the country and producing around 13,000 tons of fish annually," the state-run Radio and Television of Afghanistan (RTA) said Saturday, citing Spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Misbahuddin Mustaeen.

The ministry has been planning to raise the number to 3,500 farms in collaboration with the private sector to make the country self-sufficient in the field of fish products, Mustaeen said.

Without mentioning the volume and value of fish imported annually, he noted that Afghanistan has already achieved self-sufficiency in producing chicken. Enditem
