VALLETTA, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Malta has officially become a member of the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA), a coalition of around 30 countries and organizations, according to a press release issued by the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness on Saturday.
The membership was confirmed during an event held as part of the 15th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the release stated.
The ministry highlighted that Malta's decision to join GOWA reflects its commitment to contributing to collaborative initiatives within the offshore wind energy sector. "By engaging with international partners, Malta aims to accelerate the deployment of offshore renewable energy; a crucial element in global efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emission," the ministry added.
GOWA, established at COP27 by IRENA, the Danish government, and the Global Wind Energy Council, aims to promote the global deployment of offshore wind energy.
In December last year, Malta took significant step toward sustainability and energy diversification by initiating a public call for the development of its first offshore renewable energy project. The designated site for the project is situated 12 nautical miles off Malta's coast within its Exclusive Economic Zone. Enditem
