SYDNEY, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Two teenagers died on Sunday after a fall at a waterfall in northeast Australia.

Police in the state of Queensland said that a 17-year-old girl fell off a waterfall about 2:30 p.m. local time on Sunday at Wappa Falls, 100 km north of Brisbane, and failed to resurface.

A 17-year-old boy jumped into the water to try and save her, but also failed to resurface.

Emergency services were called to the scene and launched a major search and rescue operation.

The girl was found in the water unresponsive and deceased at about 3:30 p.m. and police divers located the boy's body just before 7:30 p.m.

The Queensland Police Service said in a statement that the two teenagers were acquainted.

Wappa Falls, a popular swimming spot on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, has been closed to the public as police investigate the incident. Police said that reports will be prepared for the coroner for the girl and the boy. Enditem
