WARSAW, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Daniel Tschofenig of Austria won the men's individual HS140 at the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup in Zakopane, Poland on Sunday evening.

After the first round, it seemed that Slovenia's Anze Lanisek would take the trophy as he jumped 145 meters to take the clear lead. However, in the final round, the 28-year-old only made 130 meters and narrowly missed the podium in fourth place.

The World Cup leader Tschofenig took his chance. After jumping 136 meters in the first round, the Austrian leaped 139.5 meters to win the contest with 316.7 points.

Norwegian Johann Andre Forfang took the silver medal with jumps of 137 meters and 136 meters, 7.3 points less than the winner. Jan Hoerl of Austria came third on 309.3 points with jumps of 136 meters and 140 meters.

After the competition, Tschofenig admitted that his victory at Wielka Krokiew hill in Zakopane was a surprise even for him.

"Lanisek had a great first jump and I know he can perform extremely well under pressure. So, therefore, I didn't really think I had a chance to win. I was just free to do my stuff, to do my jump. That truly helped me to this outcome," the winner said.

After his fifth victory in the World Cup of the season, Tschofenig extended his lead in the general classification with 1056 points. His compatriot Hoerl sits in the second place with 976 points, while Germany's Pius Paschke is third with 848 points. Enditem
