MELBOURNE, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Sixth seed Elena Rybakina is out of the Australian Open after being beaten by Madison Keys in the fourth round on Monday.
Keys, the 19th seed, defeated Rybakina 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in one hour and 49 minutes at Melbourne Park to advance to the quarterfinals.
It marks a third victory against top 10 opponents for Keys in 2025 and extends the American player's winning streak to nine matches after she won the title at the Australian Open warm-up event in Adelaide earlier in January.
The 29-year-old Keys is playing in her 11th Australian Open and has made the quarterfinals four times and the semifinals twice in 2015 and 2022.
"It's hard to believe that it was 10 years ago that I made my first semifinal," Keys said on court after the match. "To still be out here and be playing some good tennis all these years later, I'm really happy."
Keys got the first break of the match in the third game of the first set and again broke Rybakina in the ninth game to close the opener.
Rybakina, an Australian Open finalist in 2023, responded with a dominant second set in which she broke serve three times to level the match.
Momentum switched back and forth early in the deciding set, with one break each leaving the score level at 3-3 before Keys won three straight games, converting her second match point with a crosscourt forehand winner.
"Of course not the result I wanted, it was a tough match. I had some opportunities but it is what it is. I need to work better," Rybakina told reporters at her post-match press conference.
Keys will play 28th seed Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals. Enditem
