MANILA, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- A 58-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman have died in a fire that engulfed a house in Manila City in the Philippine capital, the Bureau of Fire Protection said Monday.

The bureau said the fire, which broke out around 4:39 p.m. local time Sunday in the city's Tondo District, also injured a 63-year-old man who sustained burns in the back.

The bureau said the fire originated on the second floor of the three-story house in a crowded community.

The son of the man who died told a television interview that his father rushed back to the burning house to save his niece on the third floor. But both were trapped and died.

Firefighters managed to put out the fire less than an hour later.

An investigation was launched to determine the cause of the fire, which displaced at least 10 families. Enditem
