ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia has earned 908 million U.S. dollars in revenue from coffee exports over the past six months, state-run Ethiopian News Agency reported on Monday.
The East African nation exported more than 200,000 tonnes of coffee during the first half of the 2024/25 Ethiopian fiscal year, which began on July 8, the agency quoted Shafi Umar, deputy director-general of the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA), as saying.
Umar attributed the significant increase in coffee production and productivity to the government's reforms in the coffee sector, which have focused on enhancing both production volumes and quality.
The target for the period was to earn 714 million dollars by exporting over 133,000 tonnes of coffee, he noted.
Regarded as the birthplace of Arabica coffee, Ethiopia earned more than 1.4 billion dollars from coffee exports in the previous fiscal year. The country is projected to generate two billion dollars from coffee exports in the current fiscal year, with plans to export over 400,000 tonnes.
Data from ECTA indicates that Saudi Arabia, the Republic of Korea, the United States, Germany, and Japan remain Ethiopia's primary coffee export destinations. Countries such as China, the United Arab Emirates, and Sudan are emerging as key markets for Ethiopian coffee. Enditem
