TRIPOLI, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Stephanie Koury, UN deputy special representative for Libya, on Monday met with Speaker of the Eastern-based House of Representatives Aguila Saleh, where they emphasized the importance of a comprehensive process leading to holding elections in the country.
"We emphasized the importance of a comprehensive process paving the way to national elections and establishing unified, strong, and legitimate institutions, including one government able to govern across the country and serve all Libyans," Koury posted on social media platform X.
The two officials also reviewed the human rights situation, highlighting the critical need for the rule of law and accountability.
Koury expressed appreciation to Speaker Saleh for his commitment to collaborating with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya on a "consensual, rights-based, and victim-centered national reconciliation law."
Libya failed to hold general elections in December 2021 as previously scheduled, due to disagreements among the Libyan parties over election laws.
The North African nation is politically divided currently between Eastern and Western governments.
Ever since the fall of late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid escalating violence and unrest. Enditem
