TOKYO, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks continued to rise on Tuesday, boosted by strong semiconductor stocks including Tokyo Electron and Advantest.

The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, extended its gains, rising 125.48 points, or 0.32 percent to close at 39,027.98.

The Nikkei climbed over 300 points during the morning session following reports that U.S. President Donald Trump would refrain from imposing new tariffs. Gains were also supported by overnight advances in European equities.

In the afternoon, the market stabilized as investors awaited cues from U.S. market trends. U.S. stock futures rose slightly during Tokyo trading hours, while U.S. Treasury yields declined compared to Jan. 17 levels, adding to the cautious optimism.

The TOPIX index also edged up, gaining 2.23 points, or 0.08 percent to close at 2,713.50.

On the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market, 940 advanced, 615 declined, and 87 remained unchanged. Enditem
