DAR ES SALAAM, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA), Tanzania's main opposition party, on Wednesday elected Tundu Lissu as its new chairperson, ahead of the country's general elections in October.

Delegates to the party's national congress held in the port city of Dar es Salaam elected Lissu, 57, who defeated incumbent chairperson Freeman Mbowe, 63, after serving for 21 years.

According to the results, Lissu got 513 votes, which was equivalent to 51.5 percent of the ballots cast, followed by Mbowe, who pocketed 482 votes or 48.3 percent, and Odero Charles Odero who secured one vote.

Mbowe conceded defeat and congratulated Lissu and his team for being entrusted with leading the party.

Lissu became the party's fourth chairperson after Edwin Mtei, Bob Makame, and Mbowe.

Tanzania will hold a general election in October 2025 to elect members of Parliament and the president. Enditem
