VALLETTA, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Gbejna, the Maltese cheeselet made from sheep's milk, has been recognized as Malta's first Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced on Wednesday.

Metsola, a Maltese Member of the European Parliament, celebrated the achievement as a significant milestone for Maltese and local animal herders, producers, and consumers.

The PDO designation promotes and safeguards the names of high-quality agricultural products and foodstuffs.

In a Facebook post, Metsola highlighted that the designation would allow Europe to market Gbejna as a unique artisanal and regional specialty.

Until now, Malta was the only European Union (EU) member state without a food product on the PDO list. Enditem
