Kenya shines in regional ITF/CAT Eastern African Junior Team Championships

NAIROBI, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Kenya emerged victorious as the host of the 2025 International Tennis Federation and Confederation of African Tennis (ITF/CAT) Eastern African Junior Team Championships, which concluded on Thursday in the capital city of Nairobi.

The tournament for players aged 14 and 16 years is sanctioned by both the ITF and CAT with Kenya bagging three team titles.

In the Boys' 16 and under category, Kenya claimed gold after edging Burundi 2-1.

In the opening singles, Jeff Hesbon Okuku breezed past Hordi Francis Bireha 6-1, 6-0.

Burundi leveled the rubber at 1-1 when Miki Nobel Igiraneza battled to beat Ayush Bhandari.

Igiraneza took the first set 6-2, but Bhandari forced a third set when he won the second 6-4. The Burundian won it 6-1 to take the contest into a decider.

In the doubles, Okuku and Bhandari beat their Burundian rivals 6-2, 6-4 to bag the gold for Kenya.

The hosts sunk Burundi 2-0 in the corresponding Girls' 16 and under category to clinch the top medal.

Seline Ahoya crushed Yusra Irakoze 6-1, 6-0 in the opening singles rubber before Nancy Kawira battled to edge Bebita Ishimwe 6-4, 6-4 in the second match.

Felicia Ouko and Bathsheba Ogamba won their singles matches in the Girls' 14 and under draw to wrap up a 2-0 win over Burundi for the third gold.

Ouko outlasted the hard-fighting Marie Celia Kezakimana 6-4, 6-2 before Ogamba outclassed Chantal Niyimbabazi 6-1, 6-2. Enditem
