COLOMBO, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's international airports handled over 8.8 million passenger arrivals and departures in 2024, a senior official from Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited (AASL) announced on Friday.

AASL Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications Sumith de Silva revealed that in 2024, Sri Lanka recorded 8.88 million passenger movements, 56,289 aircraft movements, and 192,498 metric tons of cargo movements.

This marks a 17.69 percent increase in passenger traffic, a 20.69 percent rise in aircraft movements, and a 21.13 percent growth in cargo handling compared to 2023, he said.

The surge highlights the pivotal role of Sri Lanka's aviation infrastructure in connecting the region and promoting travel, trade, and commerce, de Silva added.

The growth in passenger traffic was driven by the expansion of airline services and targeted efforts to enhance tourism. Enditem
