ALMATY, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Kazakhstan plans to choose a vendor for the construction of a nuclear power plant by June 2025, Kazakh Deputy Energy Minister Sungat Yesimkhanov said at a government press conference on Friday.
The outcome of the process will be finalized by the end of June, and preliminary results will be shared, Yesimkhanov said. It will be taken under due consideration of national interests, international rules and obligations, and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recommendations.
He mentioned that a Kazakh delegation, led by the energy minister, has visited all countries that are potential candidates to provide NPP construction services.
"We've prepared a list of questions for these vendors, and we're now receiving their responses," Yesimkhanov said.
In October 2024, Kazakh citizens voted in favor of building a nuclear power plant in a national referendum.
Kazakhstan is now considering high-capacity reactor technologies from four countries: France, China, Russia, and South Korea. The Kazakh Energy Ministry estimates the average cost of a single reactor unit to be around 5 billion U.S. dollars.
Two locations, Kurchatov town in northeastern Kazakhstan and Ulken village in the Almaty Region, were inspected and recognized as suitable sites for the NPP construction, the country's Kazinform News Agency reported earlier. Enditem
