OTTAWA, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Italian skater Davide Ghiotto broke the world record to win the men's 10,000 meters at the ISU Speed Skating World Cup in Calgary, Canada on Saturday.

The 31-year-old clocked 12 minutes and 25.69 seconds to crush the previous mark of 12:30.74, which was set by Nils van der Poel of Sweden at the Beijing Winter Games in 2022.

"It's a dream come true," said Ghiotto. "These three years [since Beijing], I worked very hard. It's a fantastic day, but from tomorrow onwards, I'll work more to improve myself for next year."

Metodej Jilek of the Czech Republic finished second with a personal best time of 12:37.81 and the bronze went to Sander Eitrem from Norway on 12:38.04.

After winning the men's 1,500m race on Friday, American Jordan Stolz continued his momentum as he claimed the title of the men's 1,000m with a tournament record of 1:05.90. Jenning De Boo, Kjeld Nuis and Tim Prins had a 2-3-4 finish for the Netherlands with Chinese Ning Zhongyan coming in fifth.

"When I went to the line, I figured I would be able to have enough pace in the second lap to be able to stay with his time, or at least beat it, which is what I was able to do," Stolz said.

In the women's 1,500m, Joy Beune of the Netherlands beat Japanese Miho Takagi to clinch the gold in 1:51.72. Takagi settled for the second place ahead of Dutch skater Antoinette Rijpma-De Jong. Enditem
