MADRID, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Monday that it has extended the contract of Luis de la Fuente, the coach of the Spanish national team, until after the 2028 European Championships.
The new deal extends his two-year stay and is a reward for the work De la Fuente has done with Spain since replacing Luis Enrique as the head of the national team.
The 63-year-old was promoted from Spain's under-21 side in the wake of Luis Enrique's departure following Spain's exit in the last-16 to Morocco in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In his two years on the job, he has led the Spanish to the 2023 UEFA Nations League, while last summer, Spain won the European Championships, defeating England 2-1 in the final.
De la Fuente has also taken Spain to the quarterfinals of the 2025 Nations League, where they will face the Netherlands for a place in the final four.
During his two years in charge, De la Fuente has shown a willingness to call on young players, such as Barca trio, Gavi, Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi, and has adopted an attacking style of play with two wingers.
This attacking intent has been reflected in the results obtained over the past two years, with 23 wins, three draws and just two defeats in his 28 games in charge, in which Spain have scored 72 goals and conceded just 19. Enditem
