BANGKOK, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's cabinet on Tuesday approved a legal amendment that requires banks, telecom operators and social media platforms to take responsibility for damages caused by call-center scams as part of intensified efforts to combat tech-related crimes.

In a statement, Thai government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub said the proposed amendments would impose stricter penalties, increase accountability for key stakeholders and empower authorities to target criminal networks more effectively and expedite the return of funds to victims.

Jirayu highlighted ongoing collaborations with neighboring Southeast Asian countries to dismantle cross-border scam call networks operating near Thailand's borders, as discussed at the recent ASEAN Digital Ministers Meeting, where member states agreed to prioritize joint efforts against cybercrime and social media fraud.

Once reviewed by the government's legal office, the revised emergency decree on measures for protection and suppression of technology crimes will take effect upon publication in the Royal Gazette, potentially as early as next month, the spokesperson said. Enditem
