BANGKOK -- Thailand's cabinet on Tuesday approved a legal amendment that requires banks, telecom operators and social media platforms to take responsibility for damages caused by call-center scams as part of intensified efforts to combat tech-related crimes.
In a statement, Thai government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub said the proposed amendments would impose stricter penalties, increase accountability for key stakeholders and empower authorities to target criminal networks more effectively and expedite the return of funds to victims. NEW DELHI -- At least seven persons died and more than 50 were injured when a makeshift stage installed for devotees at a religious congregation collapsed in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, a local police officer said over the phone.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Six crews of a cargo ship were rescued, while the captain was missing after their vessel capsized in the coastal area of Sarawak in the northern Borneo state, the Malaysian coast guard said on Tuesday.
The vessel, which lost contact on Monday night, was located at 6:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday, and the six crew members were recovered soon after, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency Labuan's director Izwanhadi Idros told reporters in a press briefing. (Malaysia-Ship-Rescue)

SEOUL -- A passenger airplane caught on fire at around 10:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday at Gimhae International Airport in Busan, South Korea, forcing the passengers and crew members to evacuate, Yonhap reported, citing local fire authorities.
Fire authorities said an Air Busan plane bound for China's Hong Kong from the airport in Busan, some 320 km southeast of Seoul, caught on fire at its tail before its takeoff.
