WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Senate on Tuesday confirmed Republican Congressman Sean Duffy, a former television personality, as the new administration's transportation secretary.
The upper chamber approved the nomination with a vote of 77 to 22, reflecting bipartisan support in a divided political climate. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate.
Duffy, 53, served as a Republican House representative for Wisconsin's 7th congressional district from 2011 to 2019. He joined Fox News as a contributor and co-hosted a show after leaving Congress.
The latest confirmation marks another quick approval of President Donald Trump's cabinet picks, with the Senate already approving several key positions just a week into the administration.
On Monday, the Senate confirmed hedge fund manager Scott Bessent as Treasury secretary. On Saturday, the Senate confirmed South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as secretary of homeland security.
Last week, it confirmed Marco Rubio as secretary of state, John Ratcliffe as Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director, and Pete Hegseth as secretary of defense.
Several of the most contentious nominees -- including Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for secretary of health and human services, and Kash Patel for Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director - are scheduled to appear before Senate committees for confirmation hearings this week.
