BAKU, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Azerbaijan concluded its municipal elections on Wednesday, where citizens voted for local government representatives.
According to preliminary figures from the Central Election Commission (CEC), voter turnout was slightly above 31 percent, with around 1.9 million people casting their ballots.
The elections took place at over 5,800 polling stations across the country. More than 16,000 candidates competed for approximately 8,100 seats in 685 municipalities. Candidates from 23 political parties participated in the race.
Rovzat Gasymov, deputy chairman of the CEC, reported that the voting process was conducted in accordance with the country's electoral laws, with no major complaints received.
He added that the CEC's hotline received around 35 inquiries, which were primarily requests for information, rather than formal grievances.
Final results will be announced after the ballots are counted and any potential appeals are addressed.
This is the sixth municipal elections in the history of Azerbaijan. They have been held in the country every five years since 1999. The last municipal elections were held on Dec. 23, 2019. Enditem
