CANBERRA, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Renewable power provided a record-high share of Australia's electricity supply in the final three months of 2024, the energy market operator has said.

In a new report, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) said on Wednesday that renewable energy sources accounted for 46.4 percent of supply in the national electricity market (NEM) in the final quarter of 2024 spanning from the start of October through the end of December.

It represents the highest-ever share of the NEM supply mix to come from renewable sources, eclipsing the previous record of 42.5 percent set in the final quarter of 2023.

AEMO attributed the record-high to an increase in photovoltaic (PV) solar output and a fall in the output of coal-fired power plants.

For the first time the contribution of coal-fired plants to the NEM supply has fallen below 50 percent in the December quarter.

As a result, the NEM's greenhouse gas emissions hit a record low.

The NEM produced 24.9 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions over the three months, a reduction of 1.7 percent from the corresponding period in 2023, AEMO said,

For a half-hour period on Nov. 6, AEMO said that renewables supplied 75.6 percent of all power in the grid, a new record for peak renewable contribution.

Distributed rooftop PV systems accounted for 43 percent of the generation mix during that period, with another 30 percent coming from large-scale solar and wind projects. Enditem
