BRUSSELS, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Belgium's airspace was closed on Thursday afternoon following a technical failure at Skeyes, the company responsible for air traffic control in the country.
The disruption led to the suspension of landings and takeoffs at major airports, including Brussels, Antwerp, Ostend, Charleroi, and Liege.
The issue emerged around 3 p.m. local time when Skeyes' air traffic control system malfunctioned, according to company spokesperson Kurt Verwilligen, as reported by local media.
As a result, all aircraft within the affected airspace -- up to an altitude of approximately 7,500 meters -- were rerouted to neighboring countries. The operation was executed safely using a backup system, Verwilligen noted.
The exact cause of the technical failure has yet to be determined. Aviation authorities are working to resolve the issue and restore normal operations as soon as possible.
Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for updates on flight schedules and potential disruptions. Delays and cancellations are expected until the situation is fully resolved. Enditem
